Thursday Beavers

Bringing A New Outlook Of The World To Younger Eyes:

From the beginning of the year the plan from the Leaders was to offer as varied a Programme as possible, covering not just the Beaver Colony basics in Scouting but also to use the opportunity to give the children a wider view on life by hopefully bringing a few new experiences to their lives.

Some of the Experiences offered over the run of the year included:

  • A Visit from the local RSPCA to the Colony. The arrival of the dogs who were all ‘rescue’ dogs was greeted with great appreciation by all the members - young and old. There was a small talk then on animal/pet care and welfare etc.
  • A Visit to the Dean Maxwell Home at Christmas to sing carols to the residents which was enjoyed by all in Colony and by the residents themselves some of whom joined in and sang some carols of their own. The group have been doing this for some years now and it always goes down a treat with young and old alike.
  • The Colony visited the Scouting Ireland Centre in Larch Hill at Christmas also to visit with Santa and meet the Elves. There were games and tunnels to explore and the Beavers even met Jack Frost and found him to be a nasty piece of work.
  • The Scout Troop as always took part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade and it was a great experience for the new Beavers who joined in September to be in the Parade rather than watching it from the side-lines.
  • In May we went on Nature Hike in Golden Grove. The beavers were given a list of plants (with photo’s where necessary) to find and then shown a compass and how it worked, how to find North, South, East and West and get a direction from one/ There was also a discussion about the plants in the wood.
  • On the 19th June, the Beavers went to Dublin Zoo and with fine weather all day a great time was had by all. Highlights included the Orang-Utan, the gorilla and the baby Rhino, snakes and exotic birds. (Wrestling Otters! That‘s the official line anyway.). The Beavers enjoyed the day and though tired made it home for 6.30pm.
  • Our annual camp was a great success as always. The Beavers had a host of new experiences including Night Hikes in the woods in the dark with torches; Learning how to start a camp-fire which was then used to cook some rashers and sausages and how to put out the fire safely afterwards. The older link beavers spent their first night for some of them under canvas with boys in one tent and girls in another with a Leader in a third tent nearby.
  • Other things we did: Archery, Beavers Got Talent (interesting!); Nature walk through Glenkitt.
  • Other activities included, talks on Fire safety/Road Safety/Water Safety/Camp safety, the basics of the Country Code and art work all geared towards earning the badges achieved at the end of the year.
  • We had a Quiz Night which was very successful and visited Roscrea’s New Swimming pool twice over the course of the year.
  • Each week we played a variety of games designed to both work at an individual level and to promote team work and team awareness - skills required not just for Scouting but for life as a whole.
  • All in all a great year, and we are looking forward ton 2011-2012 with anticipation!
