Scouting Reaches its 100th Birthday

 

Scouting was born one hundred years ago when Sir Robert Baden Powell held a camp in Brownsea Island, a year later in 1908 scouting began in Ireland. To mark the worldwide centenary in 2007 & the Irish centenary in 2008, Roscrea Scouts celebrated during 2007 with a year of firsts.

 

The first Order of Cu Chulainn (Scouting Ireland’s highest Adult Award) for a member of the Roscrea Group was presented to Noel Ryan for his many years service to Roscrea Scouts; the first Annual Camp of the Group in Northern Ireland was held shortly after the return of devolution; the first Patrol to represent the Group at the Phoenix (Irelands’ National Camp& Hiking Skills Competition); the first Scout team from the Group to be placed at the National Quiz; the first member of the Group to hold a position on National Management Committee when Francis Minogue was elected Provincial Commissioner for the South East; the first Cubs to camp at HQ and the first Beaver visit to Santa Claus.

The Beavers enjoyed a very active year including Nature Walks, a trip to Glendeer Pet Farm, St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the rain again!, the County Sports Day which the Group hosted with a special visit from the Fire Brigade and all!!!. One of the main highlights of the year was the visit by the Beavers to Larch Hill (Scouting HQ) to visit Santa.

 

Cub News

The highlight of the Cub Year was the Cub Camp in the monsoon rains in Scouting Irelands HQ Campsite in Larch Hill. The appropriately themed Pirates of the Caribbean Weekend certainly gave the Cubs a watery experience.

 

Scout News

 

Phoenix National Scout Craft Competition

 

For the first time in the Group’s history the Scout Section took part in the National Scoutcraft. The competition pits Scout Patrols from all over Ireland against one another in scouting skills. This year’s competition was based from the Curragh Camp and involved the Scouts going to the Glen of Immall and hiking 14kms in a day over Table Mountain. In preparation for the competition the team also climbing Galtymore. The Patrol of Padraic Mullally Patrol Leader, Joesph Kelly, Brian McNamara, Thomas Cashin, Michael Parlon, Tommy Ryan & Kalen McNamara came an excellent 29th a huge achievement at the first attempt.

 

 

Star Scouts Awards

 

For the first time in several years 9 Star Scout Awards (the 3rd highest award level) were presented to Padraic Mullally PL, Gillian Lupton PL, Joesph Kelly PL, Brian McNamara PL, Thomas Cashin PL , Tommy Ryan APL, Brian Shaw APL, Darragh Quinlan APL & Kalen McNamara APL at the opening of the Srahan Scout Centre in September.

 

Annual Camp

 

In the midst of one of the wettest summers on record the Group braved the elements for a July Annual Camp to Northern Ireland’s International Scout Centre in Crawfordsburn outside Bangor in County Down. Some 35 members of the Roscrea Scouts along with scouts from Birr, Camross and Ballykilmurray (a total travelling party of 100) enjoyed a week of great activities in the very friendly and welcoming Northern Ireland. The Group visited the Giants Causeway, the W5 Experience, the Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum as well as partaking in Abseiling, Climbing, Ice Staking, Bowling, Raft Building, Assault Course and much more.

 

After an enjoyable week the Badger Patrol were awarded the Best Patrol on Camp (Patrol Leader: Padraic Mullally and Assistant Patrol Leader Joesph Kelly)

 

 

National Quiz & Challenge Day

 

After winning the Slieve Bloom Scout County Quiz for the 2nd consecutive year the Scouts team of Niamh Abbott, Gillian Lupton, Brian Shaw and Eoghan Talbot went to Tullamore to represent the County at the National Event. With over 40 teams in attendance from all over the Country competition on the day was intense. However after the 14 rounds the team were delighted to come in third only narrowly adrift of the eventual winners.

 

Senior Scouts visit Oakwood

 

To end the year for the Senior Scout Section, a trip to Oakwood was planned. After much praying for the Irish summer to relent the Senior Patrol headed for Rosslare where after overnighting in a local Scout Den they sailed to Wales. A great day was had by all in Oakwook Theme Park and the one tired group of Scouts arrived back in Roscrea early the following morning.

 

Venture News

 

The Venture Section is the Senior Section in the Group it has two purposes one to provide the final stage of the Programme for the members as they make the final steps into Adulthood and secondly to provide service & assistance to the other sections in the Group.

 

The Ventures in 2007 continued to be of great assistance to the Group helping out on the activities and fundraisers as required.

 

Well done to all the Ventures who completed their Leaving Cert during 2007 and all the best for your College experience.

 

 

Group News

 

Srahan Scout Centre

September 29th, saw the visit of our Chief Scout Martin Burbridge to the Group to officiate at the opening of our new Scout Centre at Srahan at the base of Arderin outside Camross. The new facility which includes some 40 indoor beds and ample camping facilities will be of great use to the Scout Group locally and will bring many other scout groups & youth organisations into the area. The Group would like to thank the Kavanagh family for leasing the facility to them and the many people and companies that helped to date with the renovations of the facility.

 

 

Noel Ryan receives highest Adult Award

Noel (pictured below) was bestowed with the Highest Adult Award Scouting Ireland can bestow upon an Adult Leader for long and profound service to scouting by the Chief Scout at the Srahan opening ceremony. He has been a member of the Group since 1972, his service to the community and scouting for many years has been of the highest quality and the Group are honoured that the National level of the organisation saw fit to reward his achievements on his retirement from active service.

 

Election to National Management Committee

At Scouting Ireland National Council in Kilarney in June, Francis Minogue was elected as Provincial Commissioner for the South East Province with responsibility for the Scout Counties of  Slieve Bloom, South Kildare, Cill Dara (North Kildare), Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford and Carlow/Kilkenny. Some 7,000 youth and adult members are involved in Scouting in this area. Francis is the first member of the Group to be elected to the National Board.

 

County Awards

Well done to the adult award recipients, Francis Minogue (Silver Merit Award); Tony Foyle (Bronze Merit Award); James Marks (Certification of Commendation); Caroline Marks (Certificate of Commendation); Alwyn Stapleton (10 year service award); Noel Ryan (25 year service award), for their efforts for scouting in Roscrea.

Congratulations to Caroline Marks & James Marks upon receiving their Woodbeads marking the completion of their Leader Training.

Slieve Bloom Scout County

Congratulations to James Marks on his recent election as Deputy County Commissioner & Caroline Marks on her appointment as County Programme Co-ordinator for the Slieve Bloom Scout County (of Laois, Offaly and North Tipperary). Caroline & James will continue the Groups strong involvement in the Scout County.

 

End of Year Service & Community Awards

For the first time this year, the Group introduced an End of Year Ecumenical Service & Awards Night. All Sections were in attendance, with a good crowd of parents & families. Thanks to the clergy from the Catholic, Church of Ireland & Methodist communities for their attendance and continuing support. Well done to all award winners and thank you again to the Roscrea Credit Union, John Brophy of CAMP and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for accepting our Community Awards for your continuing service to the community of Roscrea.

2006 Annual Report

 

Scouting Celebrates it Centenary in 2007

 

2007 marks the centenary of the foundation of Scouting by Robert Baden Powell. Today over 40,000 young people in Ireland between the ages of 6 & 18 enjoy the fun & adventure of scouting.  The post war Scout Troop was started in Roscrea in 1971 by Michael O’Connell and in the past 35 scouting in Roscrea has always strived to contribute to the community which supported it. Francis Minogue is the current Group Leader moving into the new Century.

 

Today there are some 117 youth members in the Scout Group. These are split across the Groups four sections; Beavers (6 to 8 year olds), Cubs (8 to 10 ½ year olds); Scouts (10 ½ to 16 year olds) and Ventures (16 to 18 year olds). The Group achieved the highest possible “Gold” standard in the annual independent review of the Groups’ performance.

 

It typical Irish style the centenary celebrations will last 18 months, starting in February 2007 and stretching through to August 2008 to cover the official commencement of Scouting in Ireland. Roscrea Scouts & scouting in the Midlands will play an important role in this with several events planned. The first Annual Camp in Northern Ireland is planned for 2007 to the National Campsite in Bangor; an International Camp is planned for 2008; the Cubs will be taking part in the Larch Hill (Irelands National HQ) Cub Camp in June 2007; the Beavers will be organising a giant Slumber-night event and the National Cub & Scout Challenge Day events will be held in the Scout County during 2007.

 

Beaver News

 

24 Beavers led by Caroline and her team really enjoyed there first full year of scouting following their formation in April 2005.

 

The highlight of the Beaver Year was undoubtedly the Beaver Slumber night attended by some 18 Beavers in Dundrum International Scout Centre on the June Bank Holiday Weekend. The Beavers had a very active programme including partaking in a Christmas Card Art Competition, trips to Glassderry Woods, Halloween Party in Mountrath, Panto Trip, St.Patricks Day Parade, Sports Day in Pullough and much much more.

 

Cub News

 

Some 38 Cubs lead by James and his team also had a super year, again their first full year since forming in March 2005.

 

The Cubs had their first Camping Trip, with a two night Cub Pack Holiday on the June Bank Holiday Weekend to the Dundrum International Scout Centre. The other highlights of the Year including the section winning the County Mini Olympics in Banagher in June, coming third in the County Quiz and representing the County at the National Finals in Kildare, a practice camping night, County Cub Hike in Glenbarrow, Easter Egg Hunt in Golden Grove, trip to Fire Station and Stapletons Bakery, Patricks Day Parade, Lions Club Charity Walk etc

 

 

 

Scout News

 

32 Scouts progressed well during a very busy and active year. The Scouts Section Annual Camp was to Castlegregory in Co. Kerry. After arriving to storm conditions that resulted in emergency accommodation for the first night, the weather for the rest of the week was fine. The Scouts enjoyed a week of water sports, sports and much more. The Cubs who were due to move to Scouts in September visited the Camp for 1 night. The other highlights of the year including the County Camp in Ballykilmurray, the County Sponsored Hike in Glenbarrow, Log Cabin Weekend, Lions Club Charity Walk, winning the County Quiz and attending the National Finals in Kildare, trip to Killaloe OEC, Patricks Day Parade, PL’s Training Weekend in Kinnity and much more.

 

Congratulations to Tony Foyle who completed his Leader Training during 2006 and received his Woodbeads from Francis Minogue, County Commissioner at the County Awards Night in May.

 

Venture News

 

Ollie and his band of 14 Ventures gelled well during their first year together. The new Venture Section also enjoyed a very active year the highlight of which was the Annual Camp in Castlegregory. The Ventures after sleeping on the GAA dressing room floor on night one enjoyed a week including cycling the Connors Pass, water sports, Greyhound racing and the formal venture meal. Other highlights of the year included the Past vs. Present Soccer Match, Log Cabin weekend, assisting on the Cub Camp, trip to Killaloe OEC, Tidy Towns river clean and much more.

Scout Group opens New Beaver Colony and Cub Pack in 2005

 

June 23rd was a night of great celebration for the Scout Troop in Roscrea. After a 34 year history the group official opened and invested their first members to their new Beaver Colony (6 to 8 year olds) and Cub Pack (8 to 10 ½ year olds).

 

The evening was well attended, with the Martin Burbridge Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland as the guest of honour, Professional Support Officer, many representatives from the other Scout Groups in the Scout County, representatives from Sacred Heart Community and many other family and friends.

 

The evening commenced with an address by the Francis Minogue, Group Leader and a lighting of the candles ceremony to mark the start of the 2 new sections. Rousing campfire songs got everyone in the mood. The readings and blessings on the evening were thoughtfully put together with the assistance of clergy from the Catholic, Church of Ireland and Methodist communities.

After the investiture a Community Award for Services to Scouting was presented to the community of the Sacred Heart, Alywn Stapleton received his 5 Year Adult Service Award and a presentation to the Chief Scout was made.

 

Badge and Medal presentations to the new Beavers and Cubs were made rewarding their hard work over the past three months.

 


Activity Packed Year

 

With 4 Sections and some 120 youth members 2005 was an actioned packed year. 

 

Rugby Match & New Scouts Hike

January saw the Patrol Leaders attend the Munster vs Leinster Celtic League match in a rain-soaked Musgrave Park. The New Scouts enjoyed a hike to Golden Grove Woods where they were introduced to some basic  backwoodsmanship skills.

 

Annual Parents Day & Investiture

On Friday February 4th saw the investiture of 14 new scouts into the Roscrea Scouts. The new scouts invested by the Group’s Spiritual Advisor Fr. Lorcan Kenny were David Quinlan, Peter Campion, Ciara Fitzgerald, Joesph Kelly, David Lupton, Gillian Lupton, Kate Lupton, Luke McAndrew, Brian McNamara, Padraig Mullally, Adam Ryan, Joesph Ryan, Thomas Sheils and Katie Spencer.

 

The evening commenced with the viewing of the Patrol Projects on Munster Rugby, Camogie, Hurling and Music. The Scouts Own / Investiture service began with a welcome address from Fiona Maree the Group Chairperson and a Service Award Presentation to Fr. Lorcan Kenny.

 

After the investiture service all present were treated to some light refreshments before the Awards Ceremony.

 

The Awards Ceremony saw the presentation of Merit Badges, Award Badges and Service Stars to all the Scouts. Star Scout Awards were presented to Joe Sheeran, Conor Abbott, Maebh Campion and Daniel McCarthy.

Francis Minogue, Group Leader in his address thanked all the Leaders and all the current and past members of the Parents Committee for their service during 2004. Special thanks was given to Stephan Feehan who completed his term as Group Leader during 2004.

 

5 Year Service Awards were presented to Tony Foyle, Shane Cahill and Bernadette Spillane each of who have given much valued service to Scouts in Roscrea for many years.

 

Log Cabin Weekend

Later in February the Scout Troop enjoyed a weekend trip to Kinnity Log Cabin. A weekend of hiking, team building challenges and the traditional assault course was enjoyed by all.

 

National Scout Quiz

After finishing second in the County Table Quiz in February to 6th Offaly Banagher and Lusmagh Scouts, the Roscrea Team of Emily Maree, Gillian Lupton, Lindsay Delaney and Katie Spencer qualified for the National Scout Quiz Final held in Belfast.

 

On Saturday April 16th the Banagher and Roscrea teams leaders in tow set off for Belfast. After the 160 mile trip punctuated by several stops, the group arrived at their overnight accommodation in Ballyhornan Activity Centre (outside Downpatrick). On Sunday the short-trip to Hollywood outside Belfast was made. Both teams started well and at the half way stage Banagher were 4th with Roscrea lying 6th. Both teams slipped a little in the second half but recovered towards the end to finish with Roscrea in 13th and Banagher 16th.

 

Leader Training Course

Following on from their Induction sessions as Leaders, twelve of the new Beaver and Cub Leaders attended a weekend training course on the Fundamentals & Essentials of w.orking as Leaders in the Scout Group.

 

Scout County Camp

The last weekend in April saw the Roscrea Scouts hosting the Slieve Bloom County Camp at the Caravan Park in Streamstown. The Groups for Clara, Tullamore, Banagher and Durrow arrived at various stages of the Friday evening some 80 scouts in all to set-up camp. Saturday was an actioned packed day with activities including a tug-o-war competition in the Monasterry taking place. The County Soccer Blitz was keenly contested in the afternoon with Tullamore evently running out winners. Thanks to Keith Stanley and the Rugby Club for their support for the weekend.

 

Group Camp at Kinnity Log Cabin

The June bank holiday weekend saw the Group Camp at the Log Cabin. The Scouts travelled up on Friday night to set-up base, they were joined by the Cubs on Saturday morning for their first overnight trip. The programme for Saturday morning included a hillwalk for the Scouts and team challenges around the Cabin for the Cubs and their Leaders. In the evening the Beavers and families joined for a Barbeque which was followed by a rousing Camp Fire in the Cabin. Tired and weary everyone returned home on Sunday afternoon.

 

Cub Mini Olympics

Saturday June 11th, saw the new Roscrea Scouts Cub Pack took part in their first County Event, the Mini Olympics held in Portarlington. The weather shone on the 9 competing teams all day. The team put up a great performance to finish second overall in the event. Prize winners on the day were as follows:

 

8 year olds

40 metres race: 2nd: Niamh Talbot

Relay race: 1st Place: Fergal Flanagan, Rody Ryan, Kelly Maher and Niamh Talbot

Egg & Spoon race: 3rd: Niamh Talbot

 

9 year olds

50m metres race: 3rd Mark Murphy

Sack Race: 3rd Jack Delaney

Long Puck: 1st Jamie Ryan

 

10 year olds

Javelin: 2nd Aaron Dollard

Long Puck: 3rd Thomas Ryan

 

Team Events

Relay: 1st Place, Kelly Maher, Aoife Fitzpatrick, Mark Murphy, Kate Doyle, Niamh Talbot and Aaron Dollard.

 

Tug-o-war: 2nd Place, Thomas Ryan, Darragh Ugarthe, Jamie Ryan, Kyle Cahir, Brian Abbott and Jack Delaney.

 

The leaders had a successful day also, winning both novelty events (3 Legged race & Stretcher race) with great style.

 

Scout & Venture Annual Camp to Doolin in County Clare

Saturday July 9th saw some thirty scouts and ventures and their leaders embark on the highlight of the Scout year. The week long Annual Camp was held for the first time in Doolin in County Clare. The weather shone almost all week with temperatures in the high twenties most of the time.

 

The week was action packed, with the highlights including a trips to Kilrush Creek Activity centre for watersports, Galway for shopping, Inisheer island and Lahinch. Peer jumping, a fashion show, site based activities and the campfire.

 

At the end of the week the Badgers were announced as the Best Patrol on Annual Camp lead by their Patrol Leader, Joe Sheeran.

 

The troop would like to thank everyone who helped in organising the event and in particular Coughlan Transport and Andrew Walsh Coaches for their continuing support.

 

New Section Leaders

Noel Ryan and Alwyn Stapleton took over the jobs of Scout and Venture Section Team Leaders respectively in September.

 

Halloween Parties

All sections held parties to celebrate Halloween with the Beaver section travelling to Mountrath to the celebrate with the Group in Mountrath.

 

Leadership Training Course

Claire McGrath, Lindsay Delaney and Niamh Abbott attended the Patrol Leadership training course held at the start of November in the Community Centre in Kinnity. All received their Leadership badges and certificates after the weekend.
